The Whitcliffe Federation

THE WHITCLIFFE FEDERATION

Gomersal Middle School is part of a local Federation of schools known as the Whitcliffe Federation. This was formed in September 2006 and currently comprises three schools:

      -         Whitcliffe Mount Specialist Business and Enterprise College
-         Gomersal Middle School, and
-         Grylls Community Middle School

The membership of the Federation is fluid, as for example, Grylls closes on 31st August. The Federation has brought many benefits to the three schools and is led by Executive Headteacher Alan Davis (formerly Head of Whitcliffe Mount 1993-2006).

To date, the Federation has secured strong leadership in each of the three schools with John McGee appointed Head at Whitcliffe Mount, Jeanette Tate Head at Gomersal and Linda Dawson Head at Grylls. New leadership teams have been appointed in all three schools and many new staff appointments have been secured including several new subject leaders.

The Federation has also attracted additional funding from central Government to provide a new Learning Resource Centre at Gomersal Middle School (opening summer 2008) and other school improvement projects across the schools.

Senior staff  are undertaking Federation-wide training to further improve the quality of teaching and learning and this will be shared with all staff during 2008-9. Test and examination results are improving in all three schools and pupils now participate in cross – school activities eg

      -         Pupils from both Middle Schools are involved in Business and Enterprise activities with Whitcliffe Mount as part of  the Specialist Schools
      programme
-         Grylls pupils use the Whitcliffe Science labs and have taken part in other visits ready for their move to Whitcliffe in September 2008
-         Gomersal pupils visit Whitcliffe Mount for Food Technology lessons, and
-         Many pupils and students are involved in the excellent Sports Leaders award working with younger pupils within, and beyond the
      Federation

All three schools have recently received positive endorsements. OFSTED have described Grylls as making “good progress” Whitcliffe as a “satisfactory and improving school with good features”. Kirklees senior improvement manager has described Gomersal as a “satisfactory and improving school with a number of emerging good features.”

Gomersal and Whitcliffe are clearly improving schools and whilst Grylls closes this summer, the school is going out on a high.
